Im imagining a hex tile based upgrade system like in plague inc, but with trees so maybe 3-5 big trees or 7-8 smaller trees depending on which type you go under with the branches of trees combining at certain levels to reveal secret hidden tiles. Later on gaining the ability to design and combine your own nen abilities and taking contracts. After you learn nen and your category you decide what type of hunter you want to be allowing for switching later but rewarding for grinding one in particular. After the hunter exam you go off to learn nen from 1 of like 4 people and all of the stuff you do leading up to that point decide what type of nen user you'll be. You could create a really strong character and just beat everyone down with points in a strength slot or more points in charisma for easier tests and more hints and make it easier to change your rep/karma/honor level.
